Common Heir Review | Sustainable Skincare for All

Common Heir is redefining what sustainability means to skincare. An up and coming brand, they've been featured in Byrdie, Glamour, Refinery29, and more. I did the research and tried out their products- here are aaallll the details in my Common Heir review!

Who is Common Heir?

In short, Common Heir is a clean beauty brand with a focus on sustainability and inclusion. They were founded in 2020 by Angela Ubias and Cary Lin, two women of color with years of experience in the clean beauty industry. Their goal has been to make sustainable skincare accessible in a way that other major brands weren't. They also aimed to make retinol, an ingredient with notorious side-effects, more gentle and effective for melanated and sensitive skin.

Skincare Products

Common Heir is currently focusing on two star products: A Retinol Serum and a Vitamin C Serum. Both are formulated without artificial fragrance or silicones. They're also cruelty-free, vegan, and maintain their potency for up to 18 months (!!).

Sustainability

Here's where Common Heir really shines- Their products are totally plastic free! The serums are each pre-portioned into biodegradable, plant-based capsules. Furthermore, these capsules come in recyclable paper containers, keeping everything nice and light for reduced shipping emissions.

In addition to their eco-friendly packaging, Common Heir's formulas are similarly thoughtful. They are certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny, utilize only Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil certified palm/coconut derivatives, and maintain the OECD 301F international standards for biodegradables.

Common Heir is also partnered with organizations such as 1% for the Planet and the Ocean Blue Project. The latter triggers a donation of $1 per email sign-up, so make sure to check out that newsletter!

In short, they really did their sustainability homework! I even tested their claim that the serum capsules dissolve in warm water- watch my time-lapse here.

Common Heir Review

I love that Common Heir is focusing on sustainability- it's refreshing to see real innovation in an industry filled with green-washing! The paper packaging is a neat twist that still looks great on your shelf. The serum pods are awesome for travel, but may be difficult for some to handle or twist open.

Unfortunately the formulas just didn't work for me. Both serums are extremely oily- they sit on my skin rather than soaking in. I can't apply any other skincare, let alone makeup, over them. I look (and feel) greasy and gross.

The retinol also broke me out. Bad. Like, the worst breakout I've had since I was stressed out in college. It took my skin over two weeks of TLC to get back to normal! This was the first time I'd ever had such a bad reaction to a product. Of course, it's good to keep in mind that everyone's skin is different. Just because I broke out doesn't mean the retinol is a bad product or that you'd break out from it too.

In Conclusion

I adore Common Heir's mission and their commitment to sustainable and inclusive skincare. Even though I don't care for the formulas in my own routine, I can admire the amount of effort and research that went into creating them.
