New Cay Skin: Reviewing the Mo'Bay Mineral Sunscreen Drops

One thing I'll never get tired of is trying new sunscreens. Formulas today are so far from the greasy, white-cast sunscreens of our childhoods. It's fun to see brands get innovative! So when Cay Skin reached out and asked if I'd be willing to try their new mineral sunscreen, you bet your SPF I said yes. Mineral sunscreens are tough to get right. So now that I've been testing them for a few months, let's take a look at the Mo'Bay Mineral Sunscreen Drops from Cay Skin!

A Closer Look

As the name suggests, the Mo'Bay Mineral Sunscreen Drops are a lightweight and fluid mineral sunscreen. They're non-nano reef-safe, vegan, and SPF 30. I've shared the full ingredient list below.

The drops are from Cay Skin, a brand started by model and vitiligo spokesperson Winnie Harlow. They've got lots of cute slogans on their site, like "if you're not doing good, why bother?" and "for everyone Under the Sun". Cay Skin is also certified carbon neutral.

The Good

I fell in love with this sunscreen the very first time I tried it, but I believe in giving every new product a fair amount of testing time. Here are the things I came to love about the Cay Skin sunscreen drops!

Texture

The texture is lightweight and a bit runny- it reminds me of a milky serum. It definitely has the potential to drip off your face during application, so be careful! But that runny, silky smooth texture allows it to sink in quickly and thoroughly. It's quick and easy to apply. (Yes, I have green paint all over my hands and nails. I took a break from painting my hallway to talk sunscreen with you🙂)

Finish

This sunscreen leaves a natural finish, no sunscreen smell, and no whitecast! Mineral sunscreens are notorious for making you look a bit (or a lot) ghostly. It makes sense, when you think about it- a mineral sunscreen is supposed to create a physical barrier between your skin and the sun. Thankfully this formula won't leave you looking like Mark Zuckerberg surfing (iykyk).

It can look a bit luminous upon application, but these sunscreen drops settle down to a natural finish. The formula feels a bit velvety on the skin once dry.

The Bad

As much as I love these sunscreen drops, they're not entirely perfect. Here are a few things I would change if I could.

Price

The Mo'Bay Mineral Sunscreen Drops retail for $36 at Sephora or Cay Skin. You get 1.7 fluid ounces, or 50 ml, of product. That's a pretty steep price. While it's probably out of budget for a casual SPF wearer, a mineral sunscreen enthusiast may very well find the cost worth it.

Wear Time

The finish of the sunscreen can get a bit powdery by the end of the day, especially if you've been sweating. I also found that it can start to pill around my hairline- maybe the peach fuzz is stopping it from adhering to my skin as well? Both of these textural issues are pretty minor and don’t bother me enough to discourage me from wearing it (unlike this sunscreen).

Are the Cay Skin Sunscreen Drops worth a try?

I think so! If you’ve been on the hunt for a great daily mineral sunscreen and have the budget, the Mo’Bay Mineral Sunscreen Drops are worth your consideration. I love the finish and ease of application.

Let me know if you’ve given them a try! I’d love to hear what you think about them. I’m also happy to answer any questions you may have.

As always, thanks so much for reading. I’ll see you soon!

xoxo,

Lindsay
